Music
Gethyn Jones is a UK-based composer and songwriter whose musical journey began in the 1970s. As a co-founder of Jugg Music, alongside Brian Hug and the late Nick Hug, Gethyn contributed to the soundscape of British television during the 70s and 80s, composing signature tunes and incidental music for shows such as Runaround (starring Mike Reid and later Leslie Crowther), Going Out (directed by Colin Nutley), The Flockton Flyer, Noah's Castle, In Search of Father Christmas, and many more.
Their other credits include Hey Look That's Me, Anneka, Fifth Generation, BBC Radio Solent IDs, and various commercials.
"I was sold on music from the moment my cousin played me Red River Rock by Johnny & The Hurricanes," Gethyn recalls. "I grew up in a musical family - my father was a pianist, church organist and composer - but pop music wasn't exactly welcomed in the household during the 1950s and early 60s!"
Classically trained on the piano from the age of six, Gethyn's early lessons were sadly short-lived. "I suffered under the ruler [sic] of a terrifying matriarchal teacher - my knuckles still hurt."
But luckily this didn't put him off and with the arrival of pop music in his life and a cheap guitar in his hands, a new chapter began.
He spent his teenage years immersed in the evolving sounds of The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones and a multitude of progressive, inventive rock bands, teaching himself by ear and soon writing original music of his own.
"I wanted to be part of this amazing musical journey," he says. "Like many young people, I was besotted with this new and exciting, boundless culture."
An unplanned but rewarding career in BBC Radio and Television Broadcasting, especially with BBC Radio Solent, followed. It gave Gethyn the opportunity to work with remarkable people, many of whom are still good friends to this day - and to enjoy near-magical access to the BBC's legendary Gramophone Library - "any track ever recorded and released, just a requisition form away."
His collaboration with TV director Colin Nutley became the spark that led to the creation of Jugg Music, which went on to write and produce music for television and advertising for over 15 years.
In 2015, Gethyn returned to songwriting with renewed passion - this time powered by Cubase and decades of creative experience. Today, his musical inspiration remains as wide-ranging as ever.
"My present-day taste in music is catholic - absolutely anything and everything goes."
